Time for a haircut.

     As we all know, our hair falling out is part of the process of gastric bypass surgery. I haven't been upset about it since I knew it was coming and I also have (had) very thick hair.
     I did ask my doctor at my last visit how long it lasts, he said it could last up to 6 to 9 months, it just depends, but it only happens during the rapid weight loss phase. WOW! I was thinking at that moment, I better get all healed up soon so that use this time to really lose all the weight I need do.
     Since I had so many set backs from complications, I am wasting part of my time to take advantage of this time to lose more weight than I should. After all, I am still at only 40 pounds lost after 3 1/2 months post-op.
     Well, I decided today to take a picture for those of you who wonder how much hair actually falls out. This hair is what came out of my hair today taking a shower. There was still more that washed down the drain, but this is just the hair that comes out in my hands as I wash my head.
     I have decided today that I will go and get a much shorter hair cut so when it does fall out it won't be as noticeable and it won't pull out so much when I brush it out.
     So for all you ladies in a panic, this is normal.

Hey Robyn - LOVED to hear you and your family had a wonderful Thanksgiving and then a few days at 6 Flags to boot! So glad to hear you are still doing well. I decided to grow my hair after my RNY - I guess I had this idea of doing a total transformation or something. Any way - I did - I did have some hair loss but not as extreme as others. In any case when I got sick the next summer - I went back to my super short cut in desperation - because I was just too sick to be drying, straightening etc - and have kept it short since. I think you will be happy with a shorter cut - it will open up an lift your face - make sure to post a pic! Take care chickie!

Thanks Mary, I was thinking of ordering a wig as well to wear until the fall stage ends. Then I can let my hair grow back. I just hate looking dumpy everywhere I go because my hair looks awful. ;)

Thanks for sharing your "hairy" ordeal. I'm in the same boat (had RYN 8/5/2013).

So, why does it fall out from our heads and not someplace useful like legs and under arms? Haha.

Please share a pic of your new haircut! I need some inspiration

My Story

Growing up I was always thin and never had to worry about weight issues. I was lucky and thankful. My mother had always had weight issues. I recall being teased in school about having a fat mom. Back in the 1970's it was rare for people to be obese.

Kid's would yell out to me that I was going to be a whale just like my mom when I grew up. It wasn't really nice of them, but they didn't understand. I watched my mother suffer in silence and do the roller coaster with her weight from one diet to another. My mother developed diabetes in her late 30's and her weight loss efforts were all unsuccessful. She is still overweight today.

For me, I was quite the opposite. I had taken after my father at least for most of my life. I was never larger than a size 7, I had five children and was thin again in weeks. I was the woman other women hated. Ironic as it sounds, I was teased in childhood I would be fat when I grew up, and then I was despised by other women because I wasn't fat after I had children.

Then at age 42 I became pregnant with my sixth child. My pregnancy was great without complications other than I had developed gestational diabetes. I weighed 193lbs just prior to delivery and after a c-section I was down to 170 lbs. I didn't have too much to lose to get back down to size.

That is when the weigh gain began. I was tired all the time. I had no energy. I just kept gaining weight. Within a year of my daughters birth I now weighed my per-delivery weight.

What was going on? Not one doctor thought to check that my gestational diabetes had developed in type 2 diabetes after delivery.

I did the norm, I tried all the diets, not one worked. Then my doctor upon my request tested my sugar and was shocked to see it was 362, and confirmed what I was thinking all along. I was now diabetic and could not lose the weight and I was still gaining.

I started Metformin, but still no weight loss even after 9 months of taking it.

Since, it is too difficult to get any type of weight loss surgery in the United States, I have taken control of my life and I am going with the surgery in Mexico.

I have decided to use Roux en Y Gastric Bypass Surgery. This surgery also known as RNY has a 95% chance that I will no longer have diabetes and the weight loss is the bonus to me.
